Book Review: Post Carbon Reader
This collection of essays from the Post Carbon Institute (PCI), a think tank for creating a world beyond climate change, will change how you think about sustainability. The PCI is made up of thinkers from several different professions–economists, environmentalists, urban planners, farmers, activists, etc.–who are thinking beyond our current systems and ways of doing things. This book collects...

Homemade Tofu
Brett has been making tofu, from scratch.
His investigation into this labor intensive process started because the store bought tofu selection in most Danish grocery stores is expensive and not so fresh. In fact, the selection, such as it is, includes one brand of lumpy grey tofu in a jar and that’s it. So, Brett looked up how to make your own tofu in our trusty Mark Bittman How to Cook...

Geodesic Lamp
If you walk around our neighborhood at night, particularly during winter when it gets dark way too early, you will notice that in many apartments there are dramatic lamps hanging in the center of most rooms. Danes love beautiful, eccentric lamps. They seem to be an essential component in dealing with the long dark, grey winters here in Copenhagen.
We have a beautiful lamp that we found in a...

Erik Ruin's Little Lives
We recently received the finished copy of Erik Ruin’s beautiful, new ‘zine Little Lives in the mail. Ruin is a U.S. based artist who is part of the Justseeds collective. He visited us in Copenhagen last fall, while in Europe for a Justseeds exhibition.
At that time we were still involved with organizing a printshop/bookstore in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro neighborhood. The shop had...

Metropolitan Habitat #1
I am part of a new exhibition at Clark College’s Archer Gallery in Vancouver, Washington. The show, titled Lupification, or the Divide, is curated by Blake Shell. Shell writes, “The artists in this exhibition approach humanity through its connection to or separation from the natural world. Each presents a unique perspective, whether exploring the relationship, seeking to understand,...

Small acts and restraints
A while ago, when we lived in Urbana, IL, I made this poster with my friend Micah Bornstein. It is a hand carved wood block plate print, with letterpress type, printed on a Vandercook proofpress. It says, “Preserve” at the top and, “a kitchencentric life” at the bottom. We made the poster to talk about becoming aware of place. Focusing on everyday activities like growing...

Interview: Katherine Ball
We met artist and activist Katherine Ball when she lived in Copenhagen in the fall of 2010. Ball made us a worm-compost bin as a present/art piece before leaving the country on other adventures. I checked back in with her a year later to see what she was up to because of our mutual interest in issues of art, ecology, and activism and, to no one’s surprise, Ball has been busy. In fact, she barely...

Interview: Field Work
We talked with Danish artists, Field Work, about their collaboration and what projects they are working on right now. Field Work is Lise Skou and Nis Rømer. In addition to Field Work, Lise has worked with rum46, an artist run space in Aarhus, Denmark and Nis works with the independent curatorial project, Publik.
Field Work started organically through other collaborative projects that Lise and...

Pedal Power at Occupy Wall Street
We have been following the Occupy Wall Street movement from the Mythological Quarter here in Copenhagen as it has spread around the world. It has been an amazingly heartening experience to see Occupy actions springing up in towns and cities globally as well as the good things that are coming out of the movement. Things like the General Strike in Oakland, CA, Bank Transfer Day (5 November in the...

Book Review: Cultural Practices within and Across
Cultural Practices within and Across (2010) answers the question, ‘What is deglobalisation?’
Cultural Practices within and Across (2010) is a compendium of European trans-local cultural production; a useful handbook for looking at ‘the role of culture in a society which faces a number of economic, social, political and environmental crises.’ The book was edited by the...

Interview: Kerianne Quick, Source Matters
Kerianne Quick is an artist who knows how to drive a bulldozer, and also a forklift. A clue that it is important for her to take matters into her own hands. This independent spirit has led her to develop her current body of work, Source Matters.
Quick visited us at the Mythological Quarter from Amsterdam, where she is currently doing a research fellowship in the Dutch design and materialsmith...

Book Review: Toolbox for Sustainable City Living
In 2000, Scott Kellogg and Stacy Pettigrew along with several others started the Rhizome Collective in an old warehouse in Austin, TX. A consensus based collective, the group worked to rebuild the warehouse and experiment with what they were calling “sustainable city living.” The group came together from several different activist movements, but the focus of the research at the...

Interview: Kultivator at alt_cph
Kultivator is a collective of people living and working in rural Sweden on a farm. They are a family-sisters, husbands, children. They are also artists. Their art practice is centered on art and agriculture. In fact, they even staged a wedding between art and agriculture in 2010. Last weekend the Mythological Quarter attended Copenhagen’s alternative art fair, alt_cph 11: Encounters where we...

Lexicon of Sustainabilty
We found this website, the Lexicon of Sustainabilty which is seeking to use cultural production to share ideas for structuring the world in a more environmentally friendly way. So, is it working?
The project seems to be funded in a large part by Google. Not sure how to feel about that but the website itself is attractive. Additionally, there are other funders like the Post Carbon Institute who are...

Fødevarefællesskab
Fødevarefællesskab literally translates into “Food Community.” It is, in fact, a food co-op. Basically, a buying club style co-op. Every week members can pick up a huge bag of produce fresh from Danish farms. We joined the Fødevarefællesskab at the Nørrebro location. Joining means that you pay 100DKK/week and volunteer 3 hours per month to work.
Here is our first bag:
It contained...

Calm the traffic
What is a better way to calm down traffic on a busy street? Cities use speed bumps or concrete stanchions. If neighbors take traffic into their own hands, they are likely to get more creative.
For example, Portland, Oregon’s City Repair, is famous for their colorfully painted traffic calming projects. Giant sunflowers painted in a roundabout quickly slow down busy city streets. The...

Living Structure as bar
We have written before about using the Ken Isaacs designed Living Structures system in our home. The simple grid based system can be used as a starting point for necessary things from shelving to the construction of whole houses. Currently, a Living Structure inspired system is our bed/shelving, providing a more efficient use of space in our bedroom. We have also used the Living Structure system...

Pepperz
The first time we visited Dyrk Nørrebro, the local urban garden on the roof of a school, one of the gardeners gave us a pepper plant. The little plant was wilty and all of the peppers were green. It had been growing since April with not a single ripe pepper. This summer in Copenhagen has been very wet with not a lot of sun. The peppers were not able to ripen in the elements available on the...
